Braves Bounce Back With 6-2 Win

Staunton bounced back from a 9-6 loss on Thursday to Strasburg with a 6-2 road victory Friday evening in Covington.

Braves’  RHP Bailey Hall (Eastern Mennonite) tossed shutout ball for 6.1 innings to pick up the win. Hall allowed just six hits while striking out four and walking two.

The Braves snapped a scoreless tie with four runs in the top of the seventh. Brycen Thomas (Middle Tennessee State)  led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a sac bunt by Cole Swiger (Bloomsburg). Dean Hermanson (Roanoke) then singled to put runners on the corners with one out.  Bryson Parks (Western Carolina) followed with a double to left, putting the Braves on top 1-0. Trey Jacobs (UNC-Pembroke)  followed with a two-run single for a 3-0 Braves lead. Jacobs took second on a wild pitch and scored on Brett Willett’s (VCU) single, making it 4-0.

Hall exited with one out and one runner on in the seventh. Jeremy Hall (Miami) entered the game and a pair of walks, sandwiched around a fly out brought the VBL’s leading  home run hitter, Covington’s JD Mundy, to the plate with the bases full. Mundy represented the potential tying run, but Cook struck out the Lumberjacks slugger to end the threat.

Staunton added two insurance runs in the ninth. Grant Bodison (Florence Darlington Tech) reached on an error to start the inning and scored on a double by Jacobs to make it 5-0. Jacobs scored on a base hit by Willett for the Braves’ final run.
