Braves’ Staff Shuts Down Generals

Buckshot Flynn (Francis Marion) allowed just one earned run in 5.2 innings Thursday night and four relief pitchers combined to blank Waynesboro the rest of the way to preserve a key 4-2 victory.

The Braves took an early 1-0 lead on a run-scoring single by Dean Hermanson (Roanoke) and a two-run single by Brett Willett (VCU) pushed the Staunton lead to 3-0. Brandon Hernandez (UCF)  belted a solo homer in the top of the sixth to make the score 4-1.

After Waynesboro trimmed the margin to 4-2 with an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth, Ryan Flores (Lander) retired Waynesboro’s Bruno Teramoto to escape a first-and-third jam, preserving the 4-2 lead.

Jeremy Cook (Miami) pitched a scoreless seventh and Matt Thomas (Trinity) followed with a perfect eighth. Brandon Wilkes (Bethune-Cookman) struck out two in a 1-2-3 ninth to earn the save.

Staunton had just five hits in the game. Brycen Thomas (Middle Tennessee State) was 2-for-4 on the night for the Braves.
