Braves Improve To 4-2 With 16-8 Win

The Braves improved to 4-2 on the season with a 16-8 win Sunday night over the Purcellville Cannons.

After giving up a run in the top of the first, the Braves scored five in the bottom of the first to take control. Cole Swiger got things started with a single. Brett Willett (VCU) bunted for hit and a throwing error on the play put runners at second and third. Seth Hartings (UNC-Pembroke) singled to tie the score and a double by Trey Jacobs (UNC-Pembroke) put the Braves ahead. Eric Conner (Walsh) plated two runs with a double and a sacrifice fly by Hayden Leatherwood (Northwest Mississippi C.C.) made the score 5-1.

Four more runs in the second made it 9-1. Swiger doubled to start the inning and moved to third on Willett’s single. Swiger scored on a wild pitch and Willett scored when Hartings reached on an infield error. A double by Jacobs moved Hartings to third and Hartings scored on a groundout by Conner, making the score 8-1. Jacobs scored on a single by Leatherwood for a 9-1 Braves’ lead.

The Braves tacked on three more runs in the third. Conner drove in his fourth run of the game with a single and Brycen Thomas (Middle Tennessee State) plated a run with a double as the lead swelled to 12-1.

After the Cannons scored three times in the top of the fourth, the Braves countered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth one Swiger’s 3-run homer, making the score 15-4.

The game was stopped in the bottom of the sixth inning due to fog.
