Braves Use Long Ball To Down Woodstock

STAUNTON – Brett Willett (VCU), Trey Jacobs (UNC-Pembroke) and Eric Conner (Walsh) belted homers Thursday night to lead the Staunton Braves to a 12-5 win over Woodstock. With the victory, the Braves improved to 3-1 on the season.

The Braves scored four times in the bottom of the first to lead 4-1. Seth Hartings (UNC-Pembroke) drove in a run to tie the score at 1-1 and a single by Jacobs made the score 2-1. Conner hit a solo homer and back-to-back doubles by Luke Jackson (UNC-Pembroke) and Hayden Leatherwood (Northwest Mississippi C.C.) made the score 4-1.

The River Bandits tied the score on a 3-run homer by Rainer Ausmus in the top of the third, but the Braves answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Hartings walked to lead off the inning and Jacobs followed with a towering homer to right, giving the Braves a 6-4 lead. Jackson then singled, stole second and scored on a single by Leatherwood to make it 7-4. Leatherwood scored on a single by Alex Mangome (Pasco Hernando) to put the Braves up 8-4.

In the fifth, Willett homered for the second straight night, this one a 3-run blast, making the score 11-4.

The Braves bullpen limited Woodstock to one run over the final six frames. Chad Cooperman (Bloomsburg) worked two scoreless innings to pick up the win. Justin Showalter (JMU), Adrian Santiago (Webster) and Brycen Thomas (Middle Tennessee) each pitched one shutout inning.

Jacobs was 4-for-5 to lead the Braves’ 16-hit attack.
