#5 College Baseball Diary – Division I Season Underway!

ivision I baseball got underway Friday and several former and future Braves turned in strong performances.
Let’s take a look at what some of the 2018 Braves did in their season openers.
UCF upset No. 15 Virginia 6-2 and a pair of future Braves had a hand in the victory. SS Brandon Hernandez was 1-for-4 with an RBI-double and OF Chandler Robertson came off the bench and contributed an RBI-double.
Freshman LHP Joe Papeo got the opening day start for Rider and picked up the victory over Ohio. Papeo pitched five innings and allowed two earned runs on three hits. He struck out five and did not walk a batter.
VCU lost 5-4 to Liberty. 3B Steven Carpenter hit leadoff and went 1-for-4 and OF Brett Willett was 1-for-3.
Not Division I, but OF Luke Jackson was 2-for-3 with a homer, stolen base and three RBIs as nationally-ranked UNC-Pembroke lost a slugfest to Augusta 18-16. UNCP teammate IF Seth Hartings was 1-for-4 with a stolen base.
Now for a look at some big days by former Braves.
Catcher Peyton Maddox was 2-for-4 with one RBI as VMI upset nationally-ranked South Carolina, 7-6.
IF Romy Gonzalez was 1-for-3 with one RBI in Miami’s 7-1 win over Rutgers.
Longwood SS Antwaun Tucker was 1-for-3 in the Lancers 6-0 loss to SEC foe Auburn.
OF Ryan Hall belted a 3-run homer in William & Mary’s 5-4 loss to No. 12 Clemson.
Jay Charleston hit leadoff and was 1-for-4 with a stolen base in Tennessee’s 4-0 loss to Maryland.
Andy Szamski played his first game for Radford and was 3-for-5 with 3 RBIs and a stolen base in a big win over North Florida.
Toledo LHP Michael Jacob pitched seven innings and allowed five hits and no earned runs in a no decision against Iowa. He struck out seven batters.
The Citadel defeated George Mason 3-0 as SS Will Kinney was 2-for-4 with a go-ahead two-run double in the eighth and 1B Ben Peden was 2-for-4 with one RBI.
